First Win for Under The Eiffel Brother

Mornington, February 15 2012 – Saluting in the $30,000 maiden on Mornington Cup day was Lonhro three year-old Tower of Lonhro, a half-brother to talented galloper Under the Eiffel.

The Jason Warren trained three year-old was having his second start and resuming from a long spell, but was still able to overcome a wide gate to win.

Ridden forward by Ben Melham, he parked just off the leader and then found the line strongly to win by a short half head.

Tower of Lonhro was a $42,500 purchase from the Torryburn Stud draft at the 2009 Inglis Select Weanling Sale and is the third winner for stakes-placed Danehill mare Spire, who is shaping as a very nice broodmare having also left Under the Eiffel, who has won six races and more than $300,000 in prizemoney with a highlight win in the Group III MRC Alannah and Madeline Foundation Stakes.

Torryburn Stud sold an Authorized (IRE) yearling colt from Spire at Magic Millions for $110,000 earlier this year and the mare has a Magic Albert colt foal and was covered by Mossman last year.

Torryburn Stud will offer a select draft of nine yearlings for the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale.

First Winner for Crimson Reign

Sydney, January 20 2012 - Former brilliant racemare Crimson Reign posted her first winner when the Hawkes Racing trained three year-old Without Peer opened his winning account at Gosford on Friday.

Resuming from a spell, Without Peer prevailed to win the 1200 metre maiden by a short head at his third race start.

A son of champion sire Redoute’s Choice, Without Peer was bred and retained to race by Torryburn Stud and is the first foal of their former star mare Crimson Reign, who shot to fame when beating Alinghi in the $1million Inglis Heroic Championship Stakes at two, before going on to claim several stakes wins as an older mare before retiring with five wins and prizemoney just shy of $1million.

Crimson Reign has been a tricky breeder, but was covered by Fastnet Rock last spring, so fingers crossed!

Without Peer wasn’t the only Torryburn Stud bred winner to score on Friday with General Nediym three year-old Aashiq saluting for David Hayes at Cranbourne over 1400 metres.

Stakes-placed at two, Aashiq is from the imported mare Crevice (USA) and was sold by Torryburn Stud for $90,000 at the 2010 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale.

Classic Stars for Torryburn Stud

Torryburn Stud bred filly Chance Bye is one of the all time great Inglis Classic Sale fairytale success stories, which is why their draft is always a must inspect and this year features six youngsters, three by proven Group I producing sires and three by first season favourites.

Lot 201 Colt Bernardini (USA) x Wishes (NZ), by Danehill (USA) – Half-brother to two winners from the family of stakes-winners Romare and Eramor.

“This colt has plenty of good scope, leg and bone under him, as we’ve come to expect of the Bernardini’s ,” said Torryburn Stud Manager, Reggie Mackellar.

“He is a good walker and has been a very sensible horse to prepare for sale. He has a half sister by the name of La Furia Roja, who has won several times since the catalogue went to print and has won five of 11 starts in The Philippines.”

Lot 236 Filly Commands x Anjiz Star (Arg), by Anjiz – Third foal of outstanding Argentinian racemare Anjiz Star, 13 wins including two at Group I level.

“A compact filly with a lot of strength to her, she is a good walker and well balanced,” said Mackellar.

“I like the way this filly carries herself and she is tough and mentally sound. The mating with Commands looks a good one for a mare with such an outcross international pedigree.”

Lot 62 Filly Rock of Gibraltar (IRE) x Queen of the Lake, by Encosta de Lago – Second and final foal (dam died last year) of unraced Encosta de Lago mare from prolific Black Type family of stakes-winners Lucky Diva, Spirit of Westbury, Gina Lollawitcha, etc.

“This filly is going to need time, but she has all the neatness in her frame to develop into a nice horse and is a good loose walker with a nice strong hind quarter,” said Mackellar.

“She has also done well in this preparation and has a good sound temperament.”

Lot 525 Filly Myboycharlie (IRE) x Maji maji, by General Nediym – First foal of an unraced daughter of stakes-winner Hitapotomoss.

“There is a lot to like about this filly, not only is she neat and well balanced, but she has a sound temperament and a real ‘let’s just do it’ attitude,” said Mackellar.

“With the Myboycharlie’s selling so well up north, I am hoping they will be just as well received down here at the Classic.”

Lot 345 Filly Northern Meteor x Dash for Gretna (SAfr), by Sportsworld – Fourth foal of a brilliant South African Group II winning juvenile in Dash for Gretna.

“This filly has a lot of quality about her and has plenty of scope and good leg under her,” said Mackellar.

“What I like really about this filly is her toughness and determination.”

Lot 475 Filly Musket x Kings Concubine, by King of Kings (IRE) – Second foal of a half-sister to dual Group I winner Response and to the dam of Group II winner Returntosender

“This filly is neat and has good scope, although she will need time as did her sire and his famous sibling Makybe Diva, but given that patient approach I’m sure she will develop into a lovely well balanced horse,” said Mackellar.

“This filly has continued to improve in this preparation, which is a great attribute to have in a young horse.”

Torryburn Yearlings Find Favour

Gold Coast, January 15 2012 – Torryburn Stud presented five yearlings for the 2012 Magic Millions Yearling Sale and sold them all at an average $141,000 with the top seller a Bernardini (USA) colt (pictured) that made $235,000.

Knocked down to Cliff Brown, the star colt is from Quiet Life (USA), a Sunday Silence daughter of US Group I winner Storm Song.

Not far behind was a lovely Lonhro colt from Tell Someone that made $220,000 to the bid of the Hong Kong Jockey Club.

The half-brother by Authorized (IRE) to our current Group III winner Under the Eiffel from Spire will receive every opportunity to succeed after being purchased by Anthony Cummings for $110,000.

Torryburn Stud would like to thank all buyers for their support and wish them the very best of luck with their new purchases.

Next on the agenda for Torryburn Stud is the 2012 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale where we will offer eight yearlings for ourselves and clients.

Hat-Trick for Caravaggio

Melbourne, January 11 2012 -  Posting a winning hat-trick at Sandown on Wednesday was the Anthony Freedman trained three year-old Caravaggio, a $200,000 Inglis Easter purchase from the Torryburn Stud draft.

The son of Al Maher came into the race off two powerful wins at Ballarat and carried that good form into the Ratings 72 event over 1600 metres, charging to the line from back in the field to win by a length and a quarter with Jarrod Fry in the saddle.

“I was always confident he’d run home well and he was too classy for them today,” said Fry.

Raced by Joe and Debbie Throsby, Caravaggio has now won four of 11 starts and just shy of $80,000 in prizemoney with more to come now he’s hit top form.

Bred by the Towell family, Caravaggio is a three-quarter brother to Group II winner Montana Flyer and is one of six winners from terrific producer Montana Downs.

Torryburn Stud will present another fine draft of half a dozen yearlings for the 2012 Magic Millions Yearling Sale including the half-brother to Group III winner Under the Eiffel.

Prime Win for Grand Zee

Adelaide, January 4 2012 – Joe O’Neill’s Prime Thoroughbreds horses have been in top form of late with a stakes-win on Monday for Unchain My Heart followed quickly by another metropolitan success with Grand Zee, a $72,000 purchase from the Torryburn draft at the 2010 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale.

A three year-old filly by Danzero trained by Mark Kavanagh, Grand Zee improved on her debut second at Gawler last month to take the 1250 metre maiden by nearly two lengths.

Bred by Torryburn Stud, Grand Zee is the third winner from Grand Estime, a half-sister by Last Tycoon (IRE) to Group III winner Bel Danoro.

Torryburn Stud will be selling at the major Australian sales in 2012 starting with five quality youngsters to be offered at Magic Millions next week.

The Magic Millions Fabulous Five

Story by Tara Madgwick at Breednet. This time last year this vendor sold a colt at Magic Millions, who is now regarded as a leading contender for the Group I MRC Blue Diamond Stakes, so their quality draft of five youngsters will be a must inspect for all the serious buyers.

The vendor is Torryburn Stud and the colt is More Than Ready (USA) youngster Cambiaso, who won the Listed VRC Herald Sun Superracing Stakes at Flemington on debut back in October and was immediately sent to the paddock by his astute trainer Danny O’Brien.

A $300,000 purchase, Cambiaso has been set on a similar path to top colt Star Witness, who won the Blue Diamond for O’Brien in 2010.

This year, the Cornish family owned Torryburn Stud will present five yearlings with an obvious highlight the half-brother by English Derby winner Authorized (GB) to Group III winner Under the Eiffel from stakes-placed Danehill (USA) mare Spire.

To be offered as Lot 327, he is one of only two yearlings from the first crop of Authorized to be catalogued for sale. Watch him walk.

“This colt has always impressed me since he was a foal for the reasons he has such a great temperament, plus he has been consistent in his development everyday from a foal to the nice well balanced yearling you see today,” said Torryburn Stud Manager, Reggie Mackellar.

“He has great bone, plus scope and has plenty of good leg under him and while you can see plenty of his dam Spire in him, who is by Danehill, you can also see the attributes of Authorized.

“I am delighted to be taking this colt up to the Magic Millions as I really think he will appeal to a lot of buyers and the family is going so well with Under the Eiffel to be aimed at Group I company next preparation and Alright Already racing very consistent.”

Lot 229 Colt Bernardini (USA) x Quiet Life (USA) - A colt bred along international lines, he is from an unraced Sunday Silence daughter of Group I Breeders Cup Juvenile winner Storm Song. Watch him walk.

“This colt is owned by the Towell family at GT Park and came to us to be prepared for the Magic Millions,” said Mackellar.

“In the last four weeks he has really started to let down and develop and while he is a horse that will need a bit of time, there are a lot of things to like about him.

“He walks well, has good scope and is well balanced, so the patient owner is likely to be well rewarded.

“The mare has a very handy three year-old filly in Singapore by Smarty Jones called Better Life, who has won two from two and is trained by Hideyuki Takaoka. We were fortunate to prepare her for the 2010 Easter Sale and sold her for $150,000, so it’s pleasing to see her come out and do well.”

Lot 359 Colt Lonhro x Tell Someone – From a good Brisbane metropolitan winner from the family of champion filly Slight Chance and successful sire Dane Shadow. Watch him walk.

“This colt has done everything right in his preparation and has a super temperament, so will be a nice type to follow,” Mackellar said.

“He is attractive to the eye with his dark brown almost black features, so you can certainly see he is a son of Lonhro!

“He carries himself with professionalism and will fit into any environment with no stress or worry.”

Lot 45 Colt Mossman x Informant – Closely related to the previous colt, his dam Informant is a daughter of Tell Someone. Watch him walk.

“This colt is very impressive and knowing he is the first foal out of Informant, just gives you more confidence in the mare going forward,” said Mackellar.

“He is extremely well balanced with plenty of bone and scope and being by a good bread and butter stallion like Mossman, he is already ticking half the boxes.”

Lot 606 Filly Charge Forward x Endearment – Second foal of a metropolitan winning Danehill (USA) mare in Endearment from a big international Black Type family and bred on highly successful Charge Forward x Danzig cross that has produced Group I winner Headway and stakes-winners Sabrage, Solar Charged and Fort Lincoln. Watch her walk.

“This filly is well proportioned, with plenty of substance and a bomb proof temperament making her an easy filly to prepare for sale,” said Mackellar.

“Her two year old half sister by Red Ransom, named Red Hot Chillies, is being trained by Grahame Begg and he has been very happy with her progress.”

Caravaggio Impressive at Ballarat

Ballarat, December 28 2011 - The Ratings 72 event at Ballarat on Wednesday was won in impressive fashion by the Anthony Freedman trained Caravaggio, a $200,000 Inglis Easter purchase from the Torryburn Stud draft.

The three year-old son of Al Maher strode clear to take the 1600 meter event by two lengths making it back to back wins having scored at the same venue ten days ago.

Raced by Joe and Debbie Throsby, Caravaggio has now won three of 10 starts and some $60,000 in prizemoney with more to come now he’s hit top form.

Pedigree Update for Spire Colt

December 4 2011 – Torryburn Stud will offer an outstanding colt at the 2012 Magic Millions Yearling Sale by Authorized (IRE) from Spire, who was represented by a winner at Kembla on Saturday.

He is one of two winners from stakes-placed Spire, who is also the dam of this season’s stakes-winner Under the Eiffel, who won the Group III MRC Sandown Stakes after the catalogue went to print.

The current yearling from Spire will be offered as Lot 327 on Thursday January 12 at the Gold Coast.

Super Easy Half-Brother for Easter

Singapore, November 12 2011 – Talented Darci Brahma three year-old Super Easy has produced an important pedigree update for his yearling half-brother, who is being consigned to the 2012 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale by Torryburn Stud on behalf of his breeder Mike Ryan.

The Michael Freedman trained Super Easy posted his first Black Type win when scoring a narrow victory in the EW Barker Trophy Sng Gr 2 at Kranji in Singapore on Friday night.

“He got there narrowly in the end but it has been a very good win,” said trainer Michael Freedman.

“He’s done a mighty job this horse to go from winning a Class 4 at his first start here to winning a Group 2 in five starts.

“He’s a lovely horse and right from the time I first saw him in New Zealand I knew that he would be the right horse for up here.

“He was unlucky not to win the Karaka Millions back in January finishing fourth and on another occasion he finished a narrow second to Anabandana who was later named the champion two-year-old in New Zealand.

Stradbroke Goal for Under the Eiffel

Melbourne, November 12 2011 – The Group III MRC Alannah and Madeline Foundation Stakes at Sandown on Saturday was won by progressive four year-old Under the Eiffel, a $45,000 purchase from the Torryburn Stud draft at the 2009 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale.

The Tony Vasil trained son of Mossman was sent out a heavily backed favourite and always looked the winner, travelling up on the pace in second place and accelerating away in the straight to win the 1500 metre contest by the best part of two lengths.

It was the first Black Type success for Under the Eiffel (pictured courtesy Taron Clarke Photography) , who has looked in great form this preparation with easy wins at his only two previous starts this spring.

Vasil said Under The Eiffel has now completed his spring program with the promising galloper to spell ahead of a possible tilt at the $1 million Group I Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) in Brisbane next winter.

"He has done the job courtesy of a great ride,” Vasil said. "He will go to the paddock now.

"He is a pretty handy horse. I don't think we have seen the best of him.

"I think he might be a sneaky Stradbroke horse. There is probably a little bit of water to go under the bridge between now and then but that is the sort of race I really think is worth targeting with this horse.”

Group II placed as a three year-old and fifth in the Group I VRC Australian Guineas behind Shamrocker, Under the Eiffel has always had a touch of class about him and has the overall record of six wins and three seconds from 14 starts with prizemoney in excess of $300,000.

Bred by Torryburn, Under the Eiffel is from the stakes-placed Danehill (USA) mare Spire, whose yearling colt by Lonhro was snapped up by Jamie Walter’s Proven Thoroughbreds for $165,000 at the 2011 Magic Millions Sale.

Spire has a yearling colt by English Derby winner Authorized (IRE) that will be offered by Torryburn Stud at the 2012 Magic Millions Yearling Sale and delivered a colt foal by Magic Albert this spring.

Cup Day Win for Under the Eiffel

Melbourne, November 2 2011 – Talented Mossman gelding Under the Eiffel looks set for an excellent campaign after lugging 59kg to victory at Flemington on Cup Day at his second run back from a spell.

Prepared by Tony Vasil, Under the Eiffel (pictured courtesy Taron Clarke Photography) scored easily at Seymour last start when resuming from a break and ran right up to that good form on Tuesday, when powering home to win the Ratings 89 event over 1400 metres by half a length in an impressive display.

Group II placed as a three year-old and fifth in the Group I VRC Australian Guineas behind Shamrocker, Under the Eiffel has always had a touch of class about him and looks set to deliver on that promise this preparation.

A $45,000 purchase from the Torryburn draft at the 2009 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, Under the Eiffel has won five of 13 starts earning $231,051 for connections.

Bred by Torryburn, he is from the stakes-placed Danehill (USA) mare Spire, whose yearling colt by Lonhro was snapped up by Jamie Walter’s Proven Thoroughbreds for $165,000 at the 2011 Magic Millions Sale.

Spire has a yearling colt by English Derby winner Authorized (IRE) and was covered last spring by Magic Albert.

Another Stakes-Winner for Torryburn

Melbourne, October 2 2011 - Former brilliant Sydney racemare Flying Alpha was a great favourite for her owners John Cornish and his family at Torryburn Stud and her one and only foal, a colt by More Than Ready (USA) called Cambiaso saluted in the Listed VRC Herald Sun Superracing Stakes at Flemington on Sunday, an event won last year by Golden Slipper winner Sepoy.

Prepared by Danny O’Brien, Cambiaso was most professional in settling just off the pace and finishing off too strongly for talented fillies Iprimus (Magnus) and Lil Red Corvette (Henny Hughes (USA), both fillies running well for their freshman sires.

Cambiaso will now be put on a Star Witness style campaign heading towards the Group I MRC Blue Diamond Stakes in the autumn.

"He's a beautiful colt," O'Brien said.

"We paid $300,000 for him at the Gold Coast - bred by Johnny Cornish at Torryburn.

“He was a lovely yearling and he's been one of those horses who when you broke him in you knew he was pretty special.

"He's done this today pretty much on raw ability. He's only had the one jump out.

"We think we'll put him away now. He'll be a pretty serious two-year-old come the autumn."

Like he did with Star Witness, Cambiaso would most likely skip the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic with the Group I races in the southern states on his agenda.

"He's a horse we'd prefer to give him a nice break and hopefully get him ready for the Diamond and then possibly Sydney," O'Brien added.

Dwayne Dunn - the pre-eminent jockey of Blue Diamond Stakes winners in recent days - was aboard Cambiaso and was impressed with the success.

"He's shown us a fair bit at home," Dunn said. "He's still got a fair bit to learn."

A $300,000 Magic Millions purchase from the draft of Torryburn Stud, Cambiaso is bred on the same cross as Golden Slipper winner Sebring being by champion two year-old sire More Than Ready from stakes-winning Flying Spur mare Flying Alpha, who died prematurely last year after leaving just one foal.

Cambiaso comes from a prolific Black Type family, his dam Flying Alpha a grand-daughter of Zedagal, a stakes-winning sister to champion sprinter and leading sire Zeditave.

He is another smart juvenile stakes-winner bred by Torryburn, who have enjoyed past success with the likes of Group II winners Brightexpectations and Chance Bye.

Beautiful Filly Wins on Debut

Toowoomba, September 24 2011 - The first Australian two year-old race of the season was run and won on Saturday and while the winner was long odds, she was the best bred horse in the race and sold by Torryburn Stud.

She may have trialled fourth last week, but Beautiful Crown (USA) filly Crown of Coureuse (pictured courtesy Toowoomba Turf Club) showed plenty of ability when powering away to win as she pleased at Clifford Park.

A crowd of almost 1000 watched on as the John Thompson trained filly downed favourite Canningly ($3.20 fav) by three and a quarter lengths as well as star trialler Prefect ($5.10) in the capacity field $75,000 Fitton Insurance Hopeful Plate 1000m.

Crown of Coureuse opened in the betting at $24.60, somewhat justified by her fourth placing in a Two-Years-Old Fillies (1) 650m barrier trial on September 13, which was won by Neville Saunders-trained Prefect.

Stable foreman Chris Hull said her preparation gave a good indication of what she could do.

"She's a very sensible filly. She was only beaten by a length and a half in the trial in Toowoomba last week,” Hull said.

He said trainer John Thompson has the facilities at their base at southeast Queensland town Canungra to trial their own horses.

"We can trial at our place which is great,” he said.

With $48,000 going to the winner of the juvenile feature, it seems Crown of Coureuse has been a wise investment for Patinack Farm, who purchased the filly for $64,000 as a weanling from the Torryburn draft at the 2010 Inglis Select Weanling Sale.

A daughter of prolific winner getter Beautiful Crown, who is in the veteran sire category now at age 20, Crown of Coureuse is the half-sister to HK stakes-winner Sichuan Success and stakes placed Tom Coureuse, Yellow Diamond and Pirouettes being one of eight winners from top producer Coureuse.

Impressive Debut for Landing

Sydney, September 22 2011 - Gai Waterhouse produced an impressive debut winner at Hawkesbury on Thursday by a sire with whose progeny she has enjoyed a great deal of success in More Than Ready (USA).

Ridden by Tommy Berry, Landing was allowed to find his feet before powering home in the straight to win the 1200 metre maiden by two lengths in a dominant display.

Bred and offered for sale by Torryburn Stud, Landing was purchased by Waterhouse for $230,000 at the 2010 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale and is bred on the exact same cross as her Golden Slipper winner Sebring.

He is the first winner for Group III winning Flying Spur mare Joy of Flight, a sister to the dam of  Group I WATC Derby winner Grand Journey.

Joy of Flight has already foaled this spring, producing a filly by Shamardal (USA).

Sister for Kiwi Superstar

September 21 2011 - Boutique broodmare farm Torryburn Stud is home to a star studded band of mares owned by the Cornish family, but they do take on outside mares for the breeding season and one of those has just produced a full sister to a horse many believe can win this year’s Group I MVRC W.S Cox Plate.

New Zealand owned mare Cierzo (NZ), the dam of four-time Group I winner Jimmy Choux, is in Australia this spring to visit Golden Slipper winner Stratum and delivered this filly by Thorn Park on September 13 (pictured).

Jimmy Choux won the Group I New Zealand Two Thousand Guineas and Derby, before coming to Sydney where he won the Group I ATC Rosehill Guineas.

The John Bary trained entire showed he was back to his best with a powerful win in the Group I Windsor Park Plate at Hastings in New Zealand last Saturday and is headed back to Australia for the Cox Plate next month.

A much admired new arrival at Torryburn from the Cornish family owned mares is this colt by Shamardal (USA) from Miss Brightman, the dam of Group II STC Pago Pago Stakes winner Brightexpectations.

Break Card, a New Stakes-Winner for Torryburn

Sydney, August 28 2011 - Well known New South Wales based thoroughbred breeders and owners John and Marilyn Baxter got the perfect present for their 40th wedding anniversary when they won the Listed ATC Premier's Cup at Rosehill with Break Card, a $30,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Torryburn draft in 2008..

The Baxters, who operate Ruane Stud and Ruane Winery at Menangle, now have double reason to celebrate after this bonny mare scored a residual boosting first Black Type win.

Trained by Gerald Ryan, Break Card has been ultra consistent this preparation and scored a well deserved length victory in the 1800 metre contest, her overall record now six wins and seven placings from 33 starts with prizemoney in excess of $300,000.

"She got a gem of a spot during the run," Ryan said. "We'd been looking at getting her to this sort of trip for a while.

"John (Baxter) said after her last run to have a crack at it - and this is right race for her over 1800 (metres) at her home track and she's super fit.

"At last, she is a listed winner now.”

Winning rider Jay Ford said everything went according to plan during the race and the Danzero mare gave a good kick in the straight when asked to accelerate.

"There was a distinct lack of speed in the race," he said. "We went forward from the draw and ended up in a nice spot.

"She's been looking for this bit of a trip and she did the right thing and found the line strong."

Bred by Torryburn Stud, Break Card is the last foal and one of three winners from the unraced Fairy King (USA) mare Fleur de Jazz, who died in 2007.

Fleur de Jazz is a half sister to the South African Group II winner Zelator and the unraced grand-dam of current triple Group I winner Yosei.

Further back it is the family of international stars Aliyoun, Desert Story, Alamshar, Alayan and the now Australian based stayer Alandi.

First Foal this Year at Torryburn

August 22 2011 - Top class sire Shamardal (USA) is a stallion that has had a chequered career at stud with missing seasons and injuries to contend with, but with a full crop of foals arriving this spring in Australia and a good sized crop of 70 two year-olds to compete in the new season, this Darley headliner is never far from the action.

The first foal born this spring at the Cornish family owned Torryburn Stud is this beautiful bay Shamardal filly from the Group III winning Flying Spur mare Joy of Flight.

She is the fourth foal for Joy of Flight, whose previous foals have all sold well for Torryburn, a Dehere (USA) colt fetching $160,000 in 2009 and then colts by More Than Ready (USA) fetching $230,000 and $150,000 in 2010 and 2011.

Unfortunately, Joy of Flight has no yearling for the sales next year having missed to Charge Forward in 2009, but with this filly by Shamardal there is a bit to look forward to.

Kabuki Deserves a Kiss

Sydney, August 17 2011 - Promising mare Kabuki Kiss made light of the heavy conditions at Randwick on Wednesday, cruising home to win easily by three lengths.

The Gai Waterhouse trained mare has blossomed this preparation and appreciated the 1400 metres and wet conditions to win as she pleased, her overall record now three wins and two placings from seven starts with prizemoney in excess of $54,000.

“There are plenty more wins in store for her,” said Gai Waterhouse, who has enjoyed success with the progeny of her sire Johannesburg (USA), most notable with Group I AJC Australian Oaks winner Once Were Wild.

“She’s taken an age to hit her hobbles, but she’s flying now.”

A modest $35,000 purchase from the Torryburn Stud draft at the 2009 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, Kabuki Kiss is the first winner from Kabuki Doll, a half-sister to stakes-winner Delirious.

Another interesting winner on the program was lightly raced gelding Tiger Tees, who made it three wins from four starts when saluting over 1100 metres.

Torryburn Stud will offer a full brother to Tiger Tees, by Dubawi (IRE) from Parfore at the 2012 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

$100,000 Plus for Miss Cutie

Brisbane, August 14 2011- – Patinack Farm were in the winner’s circle at Eagle Farm on Saturday with five year-old Street Cry (IRE) mare Miss Cutie, a modest $25,000 purchase from the Torryburn draft at the 2008 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale.

Starting a short priced favourite, the John Thompson trained mare stormed home to score a commanding two length win over 1500 metres, her overall record now two wins and 10 placings from 21 starts with prizemoney of $105,250.

She is the first winner for the unraced Grand Lodge (USA) mare Lilymay, a half-sister to triple Group I winner Defier from the family of champion filly Triscay.

More Wins

Brisbane, July 21 2011 – More Than Ready (USA) gelding More on the Toe continues to race well at age six, winning a Class Five Event at Eagle Farm on Wednesday.

The Jason McLachlan trained gelding did best in a tight finish and has now won close to $100,000 in prizemoney.

A $110,000 purchase from the Torryburn Magic Millions draft in 2006, More on the Toe is from the smart metropolitan winning Dehere (USA) mare En Bateau, a daughter of stakes-winner Pacific Crossing.

The current two year-old from En Bateau is another More Than Ready (USA) colt in Bateau Bay, who trialled in promising fashion for the Gai Waterhouse stable at Randwick on Tuesday morning.

A $160,000 purchase from the Torryburn draft at the 2010 Magic Millions, Bateau Bay has had one start to date before spelling and looks just about ready to start racing again.

Dubleanny Tops Half a Million in Prizemoney

Melbourne, May 22 2011 – Consigned to the 2007 Magic Millions National Weanling Sale by Torryburn Stud, smart mare Dubleanny sent her earnings soaring over half a million dollars when she scored a thrilling win in the Listed VRC Straight Six over 1200 metres at Flemington on Saturday.

Dubleanny sat on the speed throughout and showed her usual fighting capabilities to score her ninth win from 16 starts with prizemoney of $537,425.

"I thought that was a pretty good effort," trainer Mick Price said. "I think it was run number six this prep and she's had two trips to Adelaide and I don't think she's the best traveller.

"She's pretty good and she loves the straight - I think that’s about four out of five now.”

A daughter of Vinery Stud based Dubleo (USA), Dubleanny was sold twice by Magic Millions prior to joining the Mick Price stable.

Debut Winner With an Update

Melbourne, March 17  2011- Making an encouraging debut win at Sale on Thursday was the Lee Freedman trained colt Caravaggio, who has a half-brother heading to the 2011 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

A two year-old son of Al Maher, Caravaggio settled off the pace and when eased into the clear in the straight found the line strongly to win the 1213 metre maiden by a long neck.

A $200,000 purchase for BBA Ireland from the draft of Torryburn Stud at the 2010 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Caravaggio was bred by Ron Towell and his family and is a three-quarter brother to Group II winner Montana Flyer  and Group II placed Montana Sunset being from the good producer Montana Downs.

Torryburn Stud as agent will offer the current yearling from Montana Downs, a colt by Elusive Quality (USA) at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale as Lot 360.

The family could be in for an even bigger update this weekend with Montana Flyer set to contest the Group I STC Coolmore Classic at Rosehill.

Montana Update for Easter

Sydney, February 28 2011 – The win of classy mare Montana Flyer in the Group III ATC Millie Fox Stakes at Rosehill on Saturday has provided an update for two yearlings being offered by Torryburn Stud as agent for breeder Ron Towell and his family at the 2011 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

Lot 360 is a half-brother by Sepoy’s sire Elusive Quality (USA) to Montana Flyer from the terrific producer Montana Downs, who has had five winners with Montana Flyer the best of them.

A tough and consistent campaigner for the Gai Waterhouse stable, Montana Flyer has won four races and placed seven times earning in excess of $480,000 in prizemoney for the Towell’s.

A Group II placed half-sister to Montana Flyer is Montana Sunset, who is the dam
of Lot 361, a filly by Shamardal (USA).

Second Stakes for Miss Gai Flyer

Melbourne, February 25 2011 - The inaugural Listed MVRC Typhoon Tracy Stakes at Moonee Valley on Friday night provided the best result possible when the champion mare’s trainer Peter Moody took out the race with his in-form filly Miss Gai Flyer.

The Flying Spur filly didn’t appreciate the wet tracks in the spring, but bounced back to win the Listed MRC Kevin Hayes Stakes at her first run back from a break and carried that good form to ‘the Valley’.

Ridden just behind the leaders by Jason Maskiell, Miss Gai Flyer was held up for a run at the top of the straight, but when she saw daylight let loose with some big strides to grab Sydney filly Obsequious right on the line, winning her second Black Type event by a nose.

“Being on top of the ground is the key to her and it’s good to see her get back into the sort of form she showed at two,” said Moody, who indicated Miss Gai Flyer would head towards the Group II VRC Kewney Stakes at Flemington on March 12.

Second in the Group II WATC Karrakatta Plate last season at two, Miss Gai Flyer was purchased for $250,000 by Damon Gabbedy’s Belmont Bloodstock at the 2009 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

Raced by Gary Pfeiler’s Sunlands Produce Syndicate, Miss Gai Flyer has the overall record of four wins and a second from eight starts with prizemoney in excess of $250,000.

Bred and sold by the Cornish family’s Torryburn Stud, Miss Gai Flyer is the second foal and first stakes-winner for the unraced Gilded Time (USA) mare Power of One, a half-sister to stakes-winner Very Droll, the dam of Golden Slipper winner Ha Ha.

The current yearling (pictured) from Power of One, a colt by Rock of Gibraltar (IRE) will be offered at the 2011 Inglis Australian Premier Yearling Sale in Melbourne as Lot 196.

Power of One had no foal last spring after missing to Commands, but is now in foal to Fastnet Rock.

More Like Her

February 21, 2011 - This New South Wales based vendor was in the news last week for breeding and selling smart stakes-winner Miss Gai Flyer and are poised for further success with another top class draft heading south for the 2011 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale starting next Monday.

John Cornish’s Torryburn Stud have been riding the crest of a wave over the past 12 months having bred and sold last season’s top class juveniles Chance Bye and Brightexpectations as well as a couple of rising star three year olds in Miss Gai Flyer and Under the Eiffel.

The Cornish family have invested in quality yearling fillies over a long period of time and their progeny are driving the current run of success with Miss Gai Flyer a prime example.

Her dam Power of One failed to make it to the races for Torryburn, but she is shaping as a well above average broodmare with her second foal, Miss Gai Flyer, sold for $250,000 at Inglis Easter Yearling Sale before going on to attain stakes success for her new owners in the Listed MRC Kevin Hayes Stakes.

Torryburn Stud will present a terrific draft of six youngsters for Premier including a colt (pictured) with a big pedigree update in Lot 196, the three-quarter brother by Rock of Gibraltar (IRE) to Miss Gai Flyer.

He is the third foal of Power of One, an unraced half-sister to stakes-winner Very Droll, the dam of Golden Slipper winner Ha Ha.

“This colt has good scope, has plenty of leg under him and is a very loose walker who is light on his feet,” said Reggie MacKellar, Stud Manager at Torryburn.

“He has really blossomed during his preparation and is very happy to carry out whatever you put to him with ease... he has such a great temperament!”

Lot 237, by Choisir from Rouge Femme is an obvious pedigree standout being a half-brother to last season’s brilliant juvenile Chance Bye, winner of the Group II STC Silver Slipper.

“A forward style of colt as you would expect, he has always been a power house with plenty of bone and substance,” MacKellar said.

“His full sister was sold down at the Melbourne Premier last year and bought by Ross Macdonald for $200,000.

“She has been named Lustful and is apparently showing good speed like her half sister Chance Bye.”

Bred to be a Classic filly is Lot 232, by European Horse of the Year Dylan Thomas (IRE) from well-related import River Lena (IRE).

“This filly is well proportioned, with plenty of bone and is really relaxed and comfortable in her gait,” MacKellar said.

“The first foal out of the mare was a filly by Tiger Hill that fetched $110,000 last year at the Classic Sale and was bought by a great judge in Paul Moroney.”

Another youngster with a significant pedigree update is Lot 266, a filly by Sepoy’s sire Elusive Quality (USA) from stakes-winner She’s Academic.

“She has always impressed me for the reason she continues to improve in both her condition and structure, and has polished off very nicely in this yearling preparation,” said MacKellar.

“The filly has a three year-old full brother by the name of Elusion, who won impressively at Canterbury for the Les Bridge stable earlier this month and looks to have a bright future.”

From the last crop of General Nediym comes Lot 327, an attractive chestnut colt, the second foal of Toastofbroadway (USA), who comes from the family of Kentucky Derby winner and Champion 3YO Colt Funny Cide.

“A flashy chestnut in colour, the colt is neat and tidy, has good bone and a good loose walk,” said MacKellar.

“He has thrived in his preparation and has a great bomb proof temperament which is an outstanding attribute to have in a horse.”

By a popular sire in
Snitzel from the family of champion miler Racing to Win, Lot 349, a colt from Watch My Lips is sure to be popular and is bred on the very successful Danehill x Royal Academy cross.

“In being so involved at the farm and in watching these young horses grow and develop, I have the opportunity to see first-hand their movement and how they carry themselves in an open environment,” said MacKellar

“This colt has a lot of quality and presence about him and is a horse that continues to catch my eye. You don’t see this type of horse come through the barn everyday that ticks all the boxes.”

Sold by Torryburn

Melbourne, February 13 2011- Property developer, racing enthusiast and horse breeder, John Cornish has been in the news during the past few weeks for his role as Chairman of the newly formed Australian Turf Club, but it was the horses he bred doing the talking in Melbourne at Caulfield on Saturday.

Quality Flying Spur filly Miss Gai Flyer got bogged on wet tracks in two runs during the water-logged Melbourne Spring Carnival, but with firmer footing recaptured her best form to win the Listed MRC Kevin Hayes Stakes over 1200 metres.

The Peter Moody trained filly was ridden a perfect race by Jason Maskiell from barrier three, travelling sweetly just off the lead and then powering clear in the straight to win by more than two lengths.

Second in the Group II WATC Karrakatta Plate last season at two, it was the first Black Type win for Miss Gai Flyer, who was purchased for $250,000 by Damon Gabbedy’s Belmont Bloodstock at the 2009 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

Raced by Gary Pfeiler’s Sunlands Produce Syndicate, Miss Gai Flyer has the overall record of three wins and a second from seven starts with prizemoney of $192,088.

The current yearling from Power of One, a colt by Rock of Gibraltar (IRE) will be offered at the 2011 Inglis Australian Premier Yearling Sale in Melbourne as Lot 196.

Power of One had no foal last spring after missing to Commands, but is now in foal to Fastnet Rock.

It was very nearly a stakes double for Torryburn Stud at Caulfield with lightly raced three year-old Under the Eiffel losing no admirers with his strong finishing run into second place behind Dusty Star in the Group II MRC D’Urbans Stakes over 1400 metres.

The Tony Vasil trained Mossman gelding had looked good in scoring easy wins at his first two runs back from an injury enforced layoff and handled the jump up to Group company with style, his overall record now three wins and two seconds from just five starts with prizemoney of $102,988.

A $45,000 purchase from the Torryburn draft at the 2009 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, Under the Eiffel is from the stakes-placed Danehill (USA) mare Spire, whose yearling colt by Lonhro was snapped up by Jamie Walter’s Proven Thoroughbreds for $165,000 at the 2011 Magic Millions Sale last month.

Torryburn Stud have been enjoying a great run of success during the past 12 months having also bred and sold last season’s top class juveniles Chance Bye and Brightexpectations.

Torryburn Stud will offer a draft of eight for the upcoming 2011 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale in Melbourne including the half-brother by Choisir to Chance Bye and a further 12 for themselves and clients at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale in April.

Another Hong Kong Win for Praising

Hong Kong, February 12 2011 –Flying Spur four year-old Praising scored an easy two length win in the Class Three event over 1200 metres at Sha Tin on Saturday.

The Ricky Yiu trained Praising has been most consistent winning twice and placing six times from 12 starts.

Praising was a $170,000 purchase for Michael Wallace Bloodstock from the Torryburn draft at the 2008 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale and was then re-offered at the NZB Ready to Run Sale later that year where he was bought by Bill Mitchell on behalf of a Hong Kong based client for $NZ230,000.

Bred on the successful Fling Spur x Dehere (USA) cross that produced Golden Slipper winner Forensics, Praising is the third foal of metropolitan winning Dehere (USA) mare Movie Star, a daughter of stakes-placed Favorite Actress.

Movie Star has proven a frustrating producer and has unfortunately not had a foal since Praising.

Moonee Valley Win for Kariba Kariba

Melbourne, February 12 2011 – Six year-old gelding Kariba Kariba is still going strong, posting his fifth win at Moonee Valley on Friday night for the Robbie Griffiths stable.

The son of Danehill Dancer (IRE) led all the way and held off the challengers to win the 1000 metre Ratings 82 event to win by half a length.

A $130,000 purchase from the Torrybrun Stud draft for his trainer, Kariba Kariba has won five of 22 starts and more than $100,000 in prizemoney.

Torryburn Stud will present a stylish draft of eight youngsters for the upcoming 2011 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale in Melbourne.

Three out of Four for Under the Eiffel

Melbourne, January 29 2011 -  Promising Mossman gelding Under the Eiffel stamped himself as a three year-old of real potential when powering clear to win as he pleased for the Tony Vasil stable at Sandown on Saturday.

Second on debut at Bendigo and then a winner at Seymour back in December 2009, Under the Eiffel spent more than a year on the sidelines after those efforts before resuming to win at Sandown on January 19.

He looked good on that occasion and even better on Saturday as he settled off the pace and then rounded up the field to win the 1400 metre Ratings 72 event by more than two lengths.

“He had them covered a long way out, it was a very soft win,” said Tony Vasil.

“He’s a really lovely horse with a great temperament... there is a lot of upside with him.

“He had a long time off when he injured his shoulder, but it doesnlt seem to have had any long term effect on his ability.”

A $45,000 purchase from the Torryburn draft at the 2009 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, Under the Eiffel has won three of four starts earning $70,588 for connections.

Bred by Torryburn, he is from the stakes-placed Danehill (USA) mare Spire, whose yearling colt by Lonhro was snapped up by Jamie Walter’s Proven Thoroughbreds for $165,000 at the 2011 Magic Millions Sale.

Spire produced a colt by English Derby winner Authroised (IRE) lasts spring and is now in foal to Magic Albert.

Second Win for Under the Eiffel

Sydney, January 19 2011- Promising Mossman three year-old Under the Eiffel resumed from a spell of more than a year to win at Sandown on Wednesday for the Tony Vasil stable.

Second on debut at Bendigo and then a winner at Seymour back in December 2009, Under the Eiffel was well backed to win despite coming off such a long break and finished full of running to win the 1200 metre Ratings 68 event by more than a length.

Vasil’s stable foreman Trent Pennuto said Under The Eiffel had endured a luckless year off the scene.

“We gave him a spell and gelded him after his second start,” Pennuto said.

“Then he hurt himself in the spelling paddock and ended up with a stress fracture of his shoulder.
“He has been back in the stable for about four months. We have taken our time with him. He had three jumpouts before today so he’s had plenty of time.”

Pennuto was reluctant to declare Under The Eiffel a stakes-class three-year-old, but said the stable was confident the gelding would measure up in Saturday races over more ground.

“The 1200 metres was probably short of his best distance,” Pennuto said.

“I reckon there will be a 1400-metre race around for him on a Saturday in the next few weeks. Maybe there will be something for him in Adelaide."

A $45,000 purchase from the Torryburn draft at the 2009 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, Under the Eiffel is from the stakes-placed Danehill (USA) mare Spire, whose yearling colt by Lonhro was snapped up by Jamie Walter’s Proven Thoroughbreds for $165,000 at the Magic Millions Sale last week.

Torryburn Stud will be selling at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale starting on Sunday with six youngsters by the likes of Commands, General Nediym and Flying Spur,

Bred on the exact same cross as Golden Slipper winner Sebring and from the female family of last year’s Magic Millions winner Military Rose, this colt is sadly the one and only foal from his talented dam who died unexpectedly last year.

Following in Session Two is Lot 237, a strapping brown filly by Dylan Thomas (IRE) from the former handy racemare Illuminar, a six time winner by champion sire Last Tycoon (IRE).

Her only foal to race is Sydney metropolitan winner Merger Benefits, the family including stakes-winners Luminia, Obsessed and Gullible.

A colt from a strong European Black Type family, he is a half-brother to handy winner Alright Already, who has now won four races having saluted at Kembla on New Year’s Day.

Gallant Second for Aashiq

Melbourne, November 6 2010– The Group III VRC Maribyrnong Plate at Flemington is always the spring highlight for the juveniles with Torryburn bred General Nediym colt Aashiq running a close second to Arctic Command.

Sixth on debut in the $250,000 Inglis Banner on Cox Plate Day when he raced greenly and was checked in the straight, the David Hayes trained Aashiq showed plenty of improvement to charge home with a late rush, failing by a neck on the line to catch the winner Arctic Command.

A $90,000 purchase for astute agent Mark Pilkington from the Torryburn draft at the 2010 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, Aashiq is the first foal of US import Crevice (USA), whose first three dams are by outstanding sires Gulch, Seattle Slew and Northern Dancer.

A mare from a versatile Black Type family, Crevice has a pedigree featuring Group I winners Circle of Life and Joshua Tree, who claimed his Group I victory in the US this year.

Miss Cutie Wins by Six

Brisbane, November 2 2010 – Patinack Farm had a number of winners right around Australia on Tuesday and one of the most impressive was four year-old Street Cry (IRE) mare Miss Cutie, a modest $25,000 purchase from the Torryburn draft at the 2008 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale.

Starting a short priced favourite, the John Thompson trained mare never gave punters cause for concern as she powered away to win the 1500 metre maiden by six lengths.

Miss Cutie was well overdue to break through having placed five times previously and with the win  has now won close to $50,000 in prizemoney.

She is the first winner for the unraced Grand Lodge (USA) mare Lilymay, a half-sister to triple Group One winner Defier from the family of champion filly Triscay.

Torryburn sold a Danzero colt from Lilymay at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale earlier this year for $90,000 to Griffiths Trading, while the current three year-old from the mare, a filly by Starcraft was also bought by Patinack Farm for $35,000.

Grand Ransom Cracks $100,000

Melbourne, October 30 2010 – Five year-old Red Ransom (USA) gelding Grand Ransom cracked $100,000 in prizemoney when scoring a brave front running win at Moonee Valley on Friday night.

The Jim Moloney trained Grand Ransom took full advantage of barrier one, spearing straight to the lead and controlling the race throughout before fighting on at the finish to win the 1600 metre Ratings 78 event by half a length.

A $70,000 purchase from the Torryburn draft at the 2007 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, Grand Ransom has won six races and placed seven times from 23 starts earning $107,167 for his large group of owners.

Grand Ransom is one of two winners from the Last Tycoon (IRE) mare Grand Estime, a half-sister to Group III winner Bel Danoro from stakes-winner Bislotto.

Torryburn Stud sold a yearling filly by Danzero from Grand Estime at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale this year for $72,000 with astute judge Joe O’Neill of Prime Thoroughbreds signing the docket.

Overdue Win for Merger Benefits

Sydney, October 27 2010 – Handsome chestnut More Than Ready (USA) colt Merger Benefits carried the colours of Torryburn Stud to victory at Canterbury on Wednesday.

Trained by Anthony Cummings, Merger Benefits was overdue to break through having finished in the first four at his previous four runs.

Sent out favourite he raced just off the leaders and finished too strongly to win the 1250 metre restricted event by a neck.

“He’s not had the best of luck in some of his previous runs so it’s good to see him hit top form today,” said Edward Cummings, representing his father.

Merger Benefits was bred by John Cornish and his family and offered under the Torryburn banner at the 2009 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale where he made quite a splash in fetching $280,000 to be the second highest priced offering at the sale.

Unfortunately, the colt failed a subsequent scoping exam and the sale fell through with the colt returned to Torryburn.

Merger Benefits is the second foal of the Last Tycoon (IRE) mare Illuminar, a daughter of stakes-winner Luminia.

Illuminar has a yearling filly by Dylan Thomas (IRE) and has produced a colt by Choisir this spring.

Strong Return for Chance Bye

Sydney, August 22 2010 – Last season’s brilliant juvenile Chance Bye made an encouraging return to racing at Warwick Farm on Saturday when she fought on strongly to finish third in the Group Three AJC Silver Shadow Stakes against a crack field of fillies.

First up from a spell of 20 weeks following an unplaced run in the Golden Slipper, the Mick Tubman trained Chance Bye (pictured courtesy Steve Hart) raced just off the speed for regular partner Kathy O’Hara and tried hard in the run to the line to grab third behind Parables and Solar Charged.

Bred and originally sold by Torryburn Stud as a weanling for $11,000, Chance Bye cost Tubman $15,000 at the 2009 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale and has now returned $536,200 in prizemoney.

A daughter of Group One winning sprinter Snitzel, Chance Bye is the second foal of the lightly raced Red Ransom (USA) mare Rouge Femme, a half-sister to Listed AJC Breeders' Plate winner High Rolling.

Rouge Femme had a yearling filly by Choisir fetch $200,000 at the 2010 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, has a yearling colt by Choisir and is due to foal to Dane Shadow.

Randwick Victory for Break Card

Sydney, July 25 2010 - Attractive three-year-old filly Break Card scored a dominant two and a quarter length win beating older rivals over 1200 metres at Randwick on Saturday, bouncing back from an out of character failure at her previous run.

"I was very disappointed last week," said winning trainer Gerald Ryan.

"Blake Shinn rode her and he didn't think she'd gone too badly.

"She didn't work as well as I wanted on Tuesday and I waited until ten past seven this morning before telling the owner we would run.

"To be fair she dropped five kilos from last week and it seems 1200 metres suits her better."

It was her fourth career victory, and her third this season, taking her prizemoney to just under $180,000.

Not far away in Black Type events for fillies last spring, the daughter of Danzero has proven a wise purchase for John Baxter, snapped up under his Ruane banner for just $30,000 from the Torryburn draft at the 2008 Magic Millions Yearling Sale.

Also bred by Torryburn, Break Card is the final foal and one of three winners from the unraced Faiy King (USA) mare Fleur de Jazz, a half-sister to South African Group Two winner Zelator from the family of this season’s Group One wining juvenile filly Yosei.

Brightexpectations on Track for Golden Rose

Sydney, July 20 2010 - The Gai Waterhouse stable produced eight winners at the Randwick trials on Monday morning led by established star Brightexpectations, who looks to have his hoof firmly on the till.

A brilliant winner of the Group Two STC Pago Pago Stakes last preparation, the dashing grey colt scored a comfortable win in his 844 metre heat, coasting around in the lead to win by a length and a half on the bit.

That effort follows on from a seven length trial win at Randwick on July 2 over 740 metres for Brightexpectations, who is obviously thriving as we move towards spring.

A $150,000 Magic Millions purchase from the draft of Torryburn Stud, Brightexpectations is fit and forward and will be hard to beat when he kicks off his new campaign with the $1million Group One STC Golden Rose on August 28 an obvious target.

Brightexpectations’ dam Miss Brightman is due to foal to Darley shuttler Bernardini (USA)at Torryburn this spring and has a weanling colt by Dehere (USA) that will head to the sales next year.

Patinack Farm was also successful in purchasing the Beautiful Crown (USA) filly from Coureuse for $64,000.

Coureuse has been in the news of late as the dam of boom Hong Kong three year-old Sichuan Success, a son of Fastnet Rock.

Victorian based Ampulla Lodge snapped up a lovely colt for $40,000 by Exceed and Excel from Becky’s Ransom (USA), a half-sister to leading sire More Than Ready (USA).

Sydney, June 20 2010 – Improving Danzero filly Break Card posted her first Saturday success when saluting for Gerald Ryan at Rosehill on Saturday in the cerise and blue spots of John Baxter’s Ruane Stud.

Not far away in Black Type events for fillies in the spring, Break Card resumed from a spell with a stylish victory in the Benchmark 76 event for fillies over 1200 metres under the steadier of 58kg.

Her overall record now shows three wins and three placings from 16 starts with prizemoney of $123,200, not bad for a filly snapped up by Ruane for just $30,000 from the Torryburn draft at the 2008 Magic Millions Yearling Sale.

Also bred by Torryburn, Break Card is the final foal and one of three winners from the unraced Faiy King (USA) mare Fleur de Jazz, a half-sister to South African Group Two winner Zelator from the family of this season’s Group One wining juvenile filly Yosei.

Torryburn Stud has proven a fine source of winners this season with juvenile stars Chance Bye, Brightexpectations and Miss Gai Flyer obvious standouts, the Cornish family owned farm set to present a sizable draft of youngsters at the Inglis Australian Select Weanling Sale this week for themselves and clients.

A gorgeous looking son of Viscount, the four year-old made swift progression through his grades last preparation ending with a win at Randwick on February 5 and has obviously gone further ahead with the break judging by this impressive win.

A homebred for the Cornish family’s Torryburn Stud, Huckleberry Friend (pictured courtesy of
www.stevehart.com.au ) sports their prominent white with red heart colours and has become a firm favourite with all connected with him.

He is the second foal and second winner from the Anabaa (USA) mare Shining Asset and was actually sent to the 2007 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale by Torryburn, but ended up being bought back at $55,000 when Pam Cornish decided she couldn’t part with him.

Huckleberry Friend has won four races and placed five times from 12 starts earning nearly $70,000 in prizemoney with the distinct promise of more to come, so her decision was a good one!

Grey in colour like her son, Shining Asset had a Delago Brom filly sell for $40,000 at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale this year to Robbie Griffiths, has a weanling colt to come by Charge Forward and was covered last spring by Northern Meteor.

Hostile Element’s first win at Hamilton

Hamilton VIC, 8 June 2010 – Torryburn bred Hostile Element won the Claremont Thoroughbreds Maiden Plate 1200m at Hamilton. Out of the Centaine mare, Fandangles, he beat a field of 12 ridden by Stacy Rawiller. Trained by Todd Rawiller, the gelding was purchased for $100,000 in the 2008 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale. Torryburn Stud wishes to congratulate the purchasers on the win.

Torryburn Yearlings Head North

Gold Coast, May 28 2010 - Even the best laid plans can sometimes go astray and that is the case for one well bred yearling who finds himself heading north to the Gold Coast next week, instead of south to where he was originally going to be sold.

A dual Group One winning son of breed shaping sire Danzig, Ad Valorem (USA) has already put three winners on the board in Europe this year and is the sire of this very smart colt to be offered as Lot 1955 at the 2010 Magic Millions National Yearling Sale next week by Murrulla Stud as agent for Torryburn Stud.

“The colt was withdrawn from the Melbourne Premier Sale due to an injury, but has now made a full recovery,” explained Reggie Mackellar, Stud Manager at Torryburn.

“He was easily our best colt we had going down to the Melbourne sale, so that was very disappointing when we had to pull him out.

“He is a strong bodied colt that has an end on him that exudes power and is well balanced with good bone. Most importantly, he loves to run!”

The colt is a half-brother to four winners from the unraced Marauding mare Zedabelle, who is a sister to stakes-winner Unison and Indexed, the dam of stakes-winner Flying Alpha, who carried the Torryburn colours to several notable wins.

Further back it’s the family of champion sprinter and leading sire Zeditave with current stars in the family including Group One winner Melito and this season’s top class juvenile filly Military Rose.

The Ad Valorem colt is one of three Torryburn youngsters that will be offered by Murrulla Stud as agent, the others being Lot 1758, a colt by US based sire Awesome Again from Mambo Chatte (USA) and Lot 2001, a colt by Rock of Gibraltar (IRE) from Bold Demand.

First Win for White Calm

Cranbourne, May 16 2010 – The Mick Kent stable took out the fillies and mares maiden over 1400 metres at Cranbourne on Sunday with Danzero filly White Calm, a $70,000 purchase from the Torryburn draft at the 2008 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale.

Having just her fourth race start, White Calm improved on an unlucky fourth placing at her previous outing to power clear in the heavy conditions and score by a length and a half with leading rider Glen Boss in the saddle.

A late foal being born on November 26, White Calm has needed some time to mature and could easily go on from here.

Bred by Torryburn, she is a half-sister to stakes-placed Party Pie being from the Bellotto (USA) mare Surreal Thing, a half-sister to Group Three winner Breath Taking from former star sprinting mare Cap D’Antibes, winner of the Group One VRC Newmarket Handicap.

Surreal Thing was on-sold by Torryburn in 2008 at the Ingis Broodmare Sale for $22,000.

Power to Exceed Salutes

Hawkesbury, May 15 2010 – Beautifully bred broodmare Power of One is now the dam of two foals to race both winners following a tenacious victory by Power to Exceed at Hawkesbury on Thursday.

A three year-old gelding by Exceed and Excel, the John O’Shea trained Power to Exceed was resuming from a long spell following an unplaced debut last December.

He showed the benefit of that time off when showing good speed from an inside draw to be competitive throughout and then kick on to win the 1300 metre maiden by a neck.

Passed in at the 2008 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Power to Exceed was retained to race by Torryburn and is the first foal of Power of One, an unraced half-sister to stakes-winner Very Droll, the dam of Golden Slipper winner Ha Ha.

Power of One is shaping as a more than useful broodmare as her second foal is this season’s very smart juvenile filly Miss Gai Flyer, a two time winner and Group Two placed when narrowly beaten in the WATC Karrakatta Plate.

Power of One has no yearling this year, but left a Rock of Gibraltar (IRE) colt last spring and was covered by Commands.

Torryburn Bred Winner in Hong Kong

Hong Kong, April 26 2010 – Lightly raced Flying Spur three year-old Praising flew  home from well back in the field to score a thrilling last stride win at Sha Tin on Sunday.

Partnered by Brett Prebble, the Ricky Yiu trained Praising was allowed to settle at the rear and when he found clear running at the top of the straight set sail for home with a powerful turn of foot.

Praising powered to the line to win the Class Four event over 1200 metres by a nose over another promising three year-old in First in Command.

Placed third and second at his only two previous starts, Praising was overdue for the win and looks to have a bright future.

Flying Spur Filly Tops for Torryburn

Sydney, 9 April 2010 – The 2010 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale has concluded with Torryburn Stud selling eight youngsters during the premium sessions for $1,720,000.

The second most expensive filly by her sire sold at this sale, she is a full sister to stakes-winner Flying Fulton from the renowned Gypsy Moss (IRE) female family.

Cups King Bart Cummings signed the docket for the top Torryburn colt at $360,000, the first foal of stakes-placed Heart Strings by top class sire Lonhro.

A colt with a real stallion’s pedigree as his dam is a three-quarter sister-in-blood to Fastnet Rock, this fellow was the highest priced youngster at the sale for his sire Lonhro.

Torryburn Stud also sold five yearlings for $325,000 during the Easter Session II.

Torryburn Stud would like to thank all successful purchasers and wish them the very best of luck with their new acquisitions.

Miss Gai Flyer Continues Torryburn Winning Run

Melbourne, April 2 2010 – Flying Spur filly Miss Gai Flyer was sent out a red hot favourite at Moonee Valley on Thursday night and ran up to expectations in bolting away to win by two and a half lengths.

The Peter Moody trained filly was an easy winner on debut at Bendigo on February 26 and then came to Sydney where she finished fifth behind Crystal Lily in the Group Three AJC Sweet Embrace Stakes.

Better for the experience of tackling stakes company, Miss Gai Flyer looked ultra professional in powering home to win the 1200 metre event and with two wins from three starts to date, she will be winning more races for her owners Sunlands Produce Syndicate.

A
$250,000 purchase for Damon Gabbedy of Belmont Bloodstock from the Torryburn draft at the 2009 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Miss Gai Flyer is the second foal of unraced Power of One, a half-sister by Gilded Time (USA) to stakes-winner Very Droll, the dam of Group One Golden Slipper Ha Ha.

Group Two Triumph for Brightexpectations

Sydney, March 27 2010 - Torryburn Stud will have the honour of breeding two Golden Slipper runners next week with dashing grey colt Brightexpectations joining Silver Slipper winner Chance Bye in the final Slipper field after a scorching victory at Rosehill on Saturday.

Champion trainer Gai Waterhouse declared Brightexpectations (pictured courtesy Mark Smith) as the horse to beat in the $3.5 million Golden Slipper Stakes after he demoralised his rivals in the Group Two STC Pago Pago Stakes over 1200 metres.

"He just bolted in and that's what he will do next Saturday," Waterhouse beamed from the winner's stall.

"It's just fabulous for everyone."

In an outstanding front running display, Brightexpectations bolted clear of his rivals in the straight and despite being eased down he still had a three and a quarter length margin over Blackball.

The win was the second for the promising colt who shot to prominence when he scored a long head victory in the Magic Millions 2YO Wyong Slipper in December.

At his next run he finished 10th, after striking interference at the 400 metre mark, in the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic - a race won by ruling Slipper favourite Military Rose.

Waterhouse said she went into the race bubbling with confidence after his recent short head second in the Group Three AJC Skyline Stakes.

"I said this morning on radio in Melbourne - I love it when a colt starts to muscle up. And that's exactly what this horse has done," she said.

"Every day he's just a little more muscular - more masculine. Everyone wrote him off saying he's too light - that's More Than Ready."

Brightexpectations kicked away his career at Flemington during Melbourne Cup week when he finished an encouraging fourth in the Maribyrnong Plate.

"That's what I thought of him," she said. "Then I bought him back and freshened him up and took him to Queensland.

"By that time he said - that's enough Gai, I'm exhausted. And then we gave him two weeks break - less than two weeks."

"We gave him 12 days in the paddock and they rang to tell me they couldn't put another ounce on him - that he's fantastic."

Purchased for $150,000 by Waterhouse from the draft of Torryburn Stud at last year's Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Brightexpectations runs for a diverse group including the Daily Telegraph Punters Club Syndicate and has already earned his connections over $279,000.

Brightexpectations is one of two winners, from two to race, for the Unbridled's Song (USA) mare Miss Brightman and is the first grey stakes-winner by More Than Ready (USA).

Twice a winner to 1350 metres, and twice placed in Sydney, Miss Brightman is from a city winning Danehill (USA) half sister to Brilliance - a former smart juvenile who won the Listed AJC Canonbury Stakes and was second in a Pago Pago Stakes.

Further back it is the family of Sha Tin Vase winner Winning Counter and former champions Taj Rossi and Dark Eclipse, who won the Golden Slipper in 1980.

Miss Brightman has a weanling colt by Dehere (USA) and is in foal to Bernardini (USA).

Silver Slipper Fits Chance Bye

Sydney, February 27 2010 – Torryburn Stud bred filly Chance Bye kept her record at a perfect three for three and booked a spot in the field for the $3,500,000 Group One STC Golden Slipper on April 3 by leading every step of the way in Saturday's $200,000 Group Two STC Silver Slipper Stakes over 1100 metres at Rosehill.

With regular partner Kathy O’Hara in the saddle, Chance Bye (pictured courtesy Steve Hart) was eased down on the line to defeat Amber’s Waltz by a length and a half.

The chunky little daughter of Snitzel is now exempt from ballot for the Golden Slipper, which was a relief for trainer and part-owner Mick Tubman as her first two wins came in Inglis sales restricted races, which does not count towards official prizemoney.

“We’re in it - they’re in trouble,” said Tubman, who has never been short of confidence in his flying filly.

“She was short of a run today.”

"She'll go straight to the Slipper now without another run. I’ll give her a trial before it and she’ll be 150 percent right.”

Originally sold by Torryburn Stud as a weanling for $11,000, Chance Bye cost Tubman $15,000 at the 2009 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale and has now returned $473,700.

The filly is the second foal of the lightly raced Red Ransom (USA) mare Rouge Femme, a half-sister to Listed AJC Breeders' Plate winner High Rolling.
Rouge Femme had a yearling filly by Choisir fetch $200,000 at the 2010 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, has a weanling colt by Choisir and is now back in foal to to Dane Shadow.

Chance Bye has the honour of becoming the first stakes-winner for her young sire Snitzel.
