The Newcastle Equine Centre is a fully equipped veterinary hospital and surgery based at Broadmeadow Racecourse, Newcastle. The Centre has a team of experienced equine veterinary practitioners catering to all specialist equine services. The Centre is equipped to perform the full range of surgeries, including emergencies 24 hours a day.

Dr. Paddy Todhunter BVSc MS Dip ACVS is the specialist equine surgeon at Newcastle Equine Centre and the principal consulting vet to Torryburn Stud. Paddy graduated from Sydney University in 1986 and studied and worked in North America for five years to gain his Diplomacy in the American College of Veterinary Surgeons and a Masters degree (equine arthritis). Paddy has previously worked at Randwick Equine Centre and Scone Veterinary Hospital and has been settled with his family (veterinary pathologist wife Kristen and four young children) in Newcastle for the last five years. His practice of first opinion and referral work extends throughout the Hunter Valley (studs and racing stables) and has a strong referral base extending from Sydney to the far north coast of New South Wales.

Reproductive and general consulting

Peter Tabak is the reproductive and general consulting vet to Torryburn Stud. Peter has over 20 years experience specialising in equine care and his expertise in the area of reproductive management has been a valuable asset to Torryburn over many years. Peter attends the stud daily throughout the breeding season and works with us in managing the breeding program for over 100 mares each year that foal down on the stud, including post foaling assessment, foal health monitoring, reproductive testing and scanning.

Master Farrier - Cade Sinclair

Tailored shoeing programs

Cade is a Master Farrier who has worked with Torryburn since 2002. Specialised corrective, therapeutic and custom fit shoeing are Cade’s particular strength. He ensures all horses on Torryburn Stud are as sound as possible and develops tailored trimming, treatment and shoeing programs for all horses on the property.

Ross Hedwards

Weaning, handling, education

Temperament is everything when it comes to managing a horse. That’s why we start our horses off on the right foot by employing expert horseman Ross Hedwards. A true ‘horse whisperer’, Ross grew up on a thoroughbred stud in Swan Hill and has over 30 years experience weaning foals and handling and educating horses. Ross ensures our foals graduate into happy weanlings and then into calm, well-behaved yearlings. His skills are evident in the good stable manners that many of our horses display during their racing careers. Ross visits Torryburn throughout each year.

Specialised feeds

Founded 25 years ago, Prydes is an Australian, family-owned company committed to producing the best quality feeds. Located at Gunnedah, in the heart of the grain producing area of New South Wales, Prydes has direct access to a wide variety of high quality grains and other ingredients needed to manufacture their horse feeds. Pryde’s Pty Ltd was the first company in the Southern Hemisphere to manufacture a range of extruded pressure-cooked cereal grain based feeds for horses. Torryburn enjoys a close working relationship with Pryde’s in conjunction with Equilize consultant Dr Nerida Richards to ensure that each horse, no matter what it’s age or lifestage is provided with a feed regime suited to their particular requirements.

Dr Nerida Richards is Equilize Horse Nutrition’s Principal Consultant and is considered by many to be Australia’s leader in the field of horse nutrition. Nerida provides advice to Torryburn on special diets and supplements for horses, including those with special needs, together with charting growth and progress of young horses. With rapidly changing scientific information in the area of horse nutrition, Equilize Horse Nutrition assists Torryburn Stud to remain abreast of the most up-to-date technology and information in horse nutrition.
